Contubernium

Limes Museum Aalen

For the Limes Museum in Aalen, we created a section of an equestrian barrack from the second century AD, as it would have stood in the forts of Heidenheim and Aalen. The building was constructed according to archaeological specifications on a scale of 1:1 using the authentic materials but largely with modern technology and is 13 m wide, 11 m deep and 9 m high. The walls were built using the clay/truss technique and the roof is covered with larch shingles. One third of the building contains a segment of a rider’s hut – a contubernium – with stables, sleeping and living quarters.
